Platforms for Grace

“[God] is helping me to rejoice in our adverse circumstances, in our poverty, in the retirement of our Mission. All our difficulties are only platforms for the manifestation of His grace, power, and love.”

Hudson Taylor

It can be hard to see how God is working sometimes. We have our plans and our preferences and assume that God’s desires align with our own. When things go awry – when circumstances and expectations don’t line up, we question the purpose of God’s design. We wonder whether somehow we got off the wrong exit, mistakenly heading to a destination that was never intended.

However, often times as we look back we can see how God was at work even, sometimes, especially during the most difficult times. We can see how His gracious hand not only brought us through the trials, but how He used them for the purposes of His Kingdom (Rom. 8:28). We can see how He was at work in us – not in just in the happy circumstances – but in all things (Phil 2:13). The challenges that we faced are often the times through which He is most glorified because we realize our complete dependence on Him and give Him the proper praise and adoration in return.

We may never face the type of difficulties that Hudson Taylor did. As an early missionary to China, the daily difficulties that he contended with, as well as the trials that were brought his way, likely exceed the adverse situations that we will encounter. Yet, like him, may we see the hurdles along our path not as obstacles but as platforms to display the greatness of our King. May we too rejoice in these circumstances because through them, our God is being praised (Phil. 4:4) .

The Days I Need the Gospel the Most – ” I have heard many people say that there is value in preaching the gospel to myself every day, whether or not I find myself carrying the guilt and shame of sin. I’ve always thought of preaching the gospel to myself as a reactive thing, but Jerry Bridges has helped me to see it as proactive. Here’s why: The gospel does not merely correct bad thinking in the past and present, but also prevents bad thinking in the future. The gospel does not just speak to forgiveness of sins, but convicts me of the value of avoiding sin and reminds me that I now have the power to overcome it.”

Beware the Peril that Lurks in Success – Looking at the life of David, Jon Bloom provides this warning: “We tend to see our need for God more clearly in adversity. But seasons of success can be our most perilous because we are so easily deceived into thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought to think. Self-exalting pride is what leads us to usurp God’s rightful rule. We must beware this danger that lurks in blessings.”

When a Mother Sins – Parents may say that they trust that God’s purposes in their children’s lives, but what about when that parent sins? Can even that be used for His glory? This post reminds us that it can.

Why Study Eschatology – Here are six practical reasons why Christians should study the end times.

Please LIke Me! – “[W]hen my peace and happiness is controlled by another person, they have become weightier in my life than God.  I have dethroned the Sovereign of the universe. I have worshipped the creature rather than the Creator. People-pleasing is idolatry.
